How to Get a Reseller License in Alabama
In Alabama, resellers need a Sales Tax License from the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR). Registration is free and done online through the My Alabama Taxes (MAT) portal. You'll need your business name, address, entity type, and either your SSN (for sole proprietors) or EIN. Once submitted, you'll receive your account number within 2-3 business days via email, with a physical license mailed separately.
Unlike many states, Alabama doesn't require a separate resale certificate form—your Sales Tax License number is what you provide to suppliers to make tax-exempt purchases for resale. Keep in mind that Alabama requires annual renewal (due October 1), and failing to renew means you lose the ability to make tax-exempt purchases. The state sales tax rate is 4%, though local jurisdictions add their own taxes on top of that.
