How to Get a Reseller License in Illinois
To sell goods in Illinois, resellers must obtain a Certificate of Registration (Retailer's Occupation Tax) from the Illinois Department of Revenue. Registration is free and completed online through MyTax Illinois. Online processing takes 1-2 business days, while paper Form REG-1 takes 6-8 weeks.
You will need:
- Business name and address
- Business structure type
- Owner/officer information with SSN
- Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)
- Number of business locations
- Description of items sold
To make tax-exempt purchases for resale, use Form CRT-61 (Certificate of Resale), which must be updated every 3 years. Businesses may also create their own resale certificate containing the same information as CRT-61. For retailers, the Certificate of Registration renews automatically; resellers (wholesalers/distributors) must renew manually every 3 years. Illinois's base state rate is 6.25%, with combined state and local rates ranging from 6.25% to 11.0% depending on location.
