To sell taxable goods in Minnesota, you must obtain a Sales and Use Tax Permit from the Minnesota Department of Revenue. Registration is free and completed online through Minnesota e-Services. Processing typically takes within 10 business days.

You will need:

  • Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Business entity information
  • SSN of owners/officers

Once registered, your permit does not expire and requires no renewal as long as your business operates without ownership changes. To make tax-exempt purchases for resale, use Form ST3 (Certificate of Exemption). Minnesota's state sales tax rate is 6.875%, with local rates adding up to 2% in some areas.
