How to Get a Reseller License in Rhode Island

Map of RI

To sell goods in Rhode Island, resellers must obtain a Sales and Use Tax Permit from the Rhode Island Division of Taxation. Registration is free (the $10 fee was eliminated in July 2022) and completed online through the Business Application for Registration (BAR). You will need your Federal EIN or SSN, business name and address, and business entity type.

Your permit must be renewed annually (permits typically expire June 30th; submit renewal by February 1st). To make tax-exempt purchases for resale, use the Rhode Island Sales and Use Tax Resale Certificate—resale certificates do not expire and blanket certificates are permitted. Rhode Island also accepts the Streamlined Sales Tax Certificate. The state has a uniform 7% sales tax rate with no local taxes.
